This is the same wood anemone as in the previous photograph, approached once again through the gentle layering of multiple exposures. Yet there is a subtle difference. In this image, the sun caresses the flower softly, while in the earlier one I tempered the light with an umbrella. That method is usually my preference for its delicate softness, and still, here the natural light works beautifully. The sun was veiled behind a thin curtain of clouds at just the right moment, otherwise the light would have been far too harsh.
Once again, a warm wash of pink and orange, with a clear and graceful subject at its heart. I feel a deep, quiet joy whenever I succeed in creating images like this. Pure delight.

Dit is hetzelfde bosanemoontje als in de vorige foto, ook met ongeveer dezelfde benadering met meervoudige belichting. Maar er is een verschil. Bij deze foto schijnt de zon zachtjes op de bloem, bij de vorige heb ik het licht gefilterd met een paraplu. Dat laatste heeft meestal mijn voorkeur vanwege de zachtheid en toch werkt het hier heel goed. Dat komt ook omdat de zon op dat moment achter wat sluierbewolking zat anders had het veel te fel geweest. Wederom een lekker roze/oranje plaatje met een duidelijk hoofdonderwerp. Ik word dolgelukkig als het mij lukt om zulke foto’s te schieten. Heerlijk echt.

I photographed this delightful explosion of color last Monday in Oegstgeest. They are white wood anemones captured in a triple exposure. It is so much fun to discover how you can play with softness, structure, and color simply by getting to know your camera better and learning how to combine images. On Tuesday, June 16, I will be giving the final workshop on the subject of multiple exposure of this spring season. That workshop will take place in Utrecht.

Deze heerlijke kleurexplosie fotografeerde ik afgelopen maandag in Oegstgeest. Het zijn witte bosanemoontjes in een driedubbele belichting. Het is zo leuk om te ontdekken hoe je kunt spelen met zachtheid en structuur en kleur door simpelweg je camera beter te leren kennen en te leren hoe je beelden samen kunt voegen. Op dinsdag 16 juni geef ik de laatste workshop over het onderwerp meervoudige belichting van dit voorjaarsseizoen. Die workshop is in Utrecht. Wood anemones… so delicate and so beautiful.
Last Monday, the forest was absolutely magical.
I hosted a multiple exposure workshop among the wood anemones, hyacinths, and daffodils and it was simply perfect. No wind, sunshine… just pure joy.
Afterwards, I stayed a little longer on my own. Inspired by the enthusiasm of the participants and the thousands of flowers around me, I was completely in the flow.
This is one of my favorite images from that day: a combination of three photos layered together using multiple exposure.

Bosanemoontjes… zo fragiel en zó mooi.
Afgelopen maandag was het bos echt op z’n allermooist.
Ik gaf een workshop meervoudige belichting tussen de bosanemonen, hyacinten en narcissen en het was gewoon perfect. Windstil, zonnetje erbij… genieten!
Na afloop ben ik zelf nog even gebleven. Geïnspireerd door het enthousiasme van de deelnemers én de duizenden bloemetjes om me heen, zat ik er helemaal lekker in.
Dit is één van mijn favoriete beelden van die dag: een combinatie van drie foto’s, over elkaar heen geschoten met meervoudige belichting.

Not everything is romance, dancing and love with g

Not everything is romance, dancing and love with great crested grebes. Sometimes they can really fly off the handle. This is the same pair as in the previous photos, and suddenly -right in the middle of their courtship display- one shoots out of the water and jumps straight over the other. That one gets quite a fright, haha. A moment later the grebe swims back in an admiral’s posture, as if nothing had happened. Probably just a bit of showing off, since there was no third grebe in sight. That can sometimes be a reason for sudden commotion.

Niet alles is romantiek, dans en liefde bij de futen. Soms kunnen ze ook flink uit hun veren schieten. Dit is hetzelfde koppeltje als op de vorige foto’s, en plotseling -midden in de balts- schiet de een uit het water en springt zomaar over de ander heen. Die schrikt zich een hoedje, haha. Even later zwemt de fuut weer terug in admiraalshouding, alsof er niets gebeurd is. Vast een staaltje grootdoenerij, want een derde fuut was nergens te bekennen. Dat wil ook nog weleens voor opschudding zorgen.

These grebes were photographed in the first light

These grebes were photographed in the first light of the morning and that immediately creates a completely different atmosphere compared to the blue hour. The contrasts become stronger, the colors warmer and more intense, giving the images a very different kind of energy.
In the first photo, the sun shines perfectly into the striking red eyes of the grebes in breeding plumage.
In the second photo, you can see one of the pair in the so-called admiral posture, something I always find truly impressive to witness.

Deze futen heb ik vastgelegd in het eerste ochtendlicht en dat geeft meteen een totaal andere sfeer dan tijdens het blauwe uurtje. De contrasten zijn sterker, de kleuren warmer en intenser, en de beelden krijgen een heel eigen dynamiek.
Op de eerste foto vangt de zon precies het knalrode oog van de futen in broedkleed.
Op de tweede foto zie je één van de twee in admiraalshouding, dat blijft voor mij elke keer weer een indrukwekkend moment om te zien.

Courtship displays by great crested grebes in the

Courtship displays by great crested grebes in the blue hour, just before sunrise.
In the first photo, love is in the air — their beaks perfectly crossed, as if they’re playing a game of tic-tac-toe. Haha…
And that loving look in the second photo… pure nature at its finest.
The soft light of the blue hour creates very little contrast and exactly those dreamy pastel tones that I love so much. The pink colors were missing unfortunately.
Tomorrow I’ll share the same grebes again, but this time bathed in the very first rays of sunlight.

Baltsende futen in het blauwe uurtje, vlak voor zonsopkomst. Op de eerste foto spat de liefde ervan af — de snavels perfect gekruist, alsof ze boter, kaas en eieren spelen. Haha… En die liefdevolle blik op de tweede foto… puur natuurspektakel. Het zachte licht van het blauwe uurtje zorgt voor weinig contrast en precies die dromerige pasteltinten waar ik zo van houd. De roze kleur waar ik blij van wordt, was er helaas niet deze ochtend. Morgen deel ik dezelfde futen opnieuw, maar dan badend in de eerste zonnestralen.
