Last Saturday morning I had a choice: look for the deer first or photograph the landscape? I chose the latter, and with the mist, heathland and gorgeous pastel colours, it definitely wasn’t a bad decision.
Until I found the deer later and a lady showed me a photo she’d taken on her phone earlier that morning… Thick ground mist, with a magnificent stag emerging from it in the middle of the field, the hinds following behind him. Well… even on her phone it looked spectacular. 😂
Suddenly I understood why those guys in camouflage with their enormous telephoto lenses had been grinning at me so sarcastically. They knew. Hahaha.
A little bit of FOMO? Absolutely. But hey… they didn’t get those gorgeous pastel heathland shots. 😉

Afgelopen zaterdagochtend had ik een keuze: eerst op zoek naar de herten of eerst het landschap? Ik koos voor het laatste en met die mist, heide en heerlijke pasteltinten was dat absoluut geen verkeerde keuze.
Totdat ik later bij de herten een mevrouw sprak die me haar telefoonfoto van eerder die ochtend liet zien… Volop grondmist, met midden in het veld een prachtige geweidrager die uit de mist kwam lopen, de hindes achter hem aan. Tja… zelfs op haar telefoon zag het er spectaculair uit. 😂
Toen snapte ik ineens waarom die mannen in camouflage met hun mega-telelenzen zo sarcastisch naar me hadden staan glunderen. Zij wisten het. Hahaha.
Een klein beetje FOMO? Zeker. Maar hé… zij hebben die heerlijk pastelkleurige heidefoto’s dan weer niet.

And then the sun came through!!! Well… sort of.
I was completely ready for it: spectacular sunbeams cutting through the mist, bring it on! But unfortunately… they never really showed up. The sun became a little brighter for a moment, only to slowly fade away again.
But what I got instead was just as beautiful. The most gorgeous soft glow filled the sky, with the most amazing pastel colours. Exactly the kind of colours I absolutely love.
So, no spectacular sunbeams this time… but honestly, when nature gives you something like this instead, you won’t hear me complaining.
I just stood there, taking it all in and enjoying every single second!

En toen kwam de zon door!!! Nou ja… een soort van dan.
Ik stond er helemaal klaar voor: spectaculaire zonneharpen door de mist, kom maar op! Maar helaas… die bleven uit. De zon werd heel even wat feller, om daarna weer langzaam uit te doven.
Maar wat ervoor in de plaats kwam, was minstens zo mooi. Een prachtige zachte glow in de lucht, met de meest geweldige pasteltinten. Precies die kleuren waar ik zó van houd.
Geen spectaculaire zonneharpen dus, maar ach… als de natuur je dit cadeau geeft, hoor je mij echt niet klagen.
Ik heb intens staan genieten!

Heather, mist and lonely little trees… well, pretty much all the ingredients for a fantastic morning!

I was seriously torn though: should I try to find the deer first, or go for landscapes? I chose the latter, and I definitely didn’t regret it.

Well… until I found the deer later and saw how beautifully the rutting stag had been standing in the low-lying mist. That’s when I had a brief “ohhhh shit… wrong choice!” moment. Haha.

But then I look back at these photos and they make me just as happy. The mist, the colours, those lonely little trees… I absolutely love it!

You simply can’t be everywhere at once. I had a fantastic morning, and in the end, that’s always the most important thing.

Heide, mist en eenzame boompjes… tja, alle ingrediënten voor een fantastische ochtend!

Ik zat alleen flink in tweestrijd: eerst proberen de herten te vinden of toch voor het landschap gaan? Ik koos voor het laatste en daar had ik absoluut geen spijt van.
Nou ja… totdat ik later de herten vond en zag hoe prachtig het bronstige hert in de grondmist had gestaan. Toen dacht ik toch heel even: ohhhh shit… verkeerde keuze! Haha.

Maar goed, als ik deze foto’s terugzie, word ik hier ook gewoon heel blij van. Die mist, de kleuren, de eenzame boompjes… heerlijk!

Dus ach, soms kun je niet overal tegelijk zijn. Ik heb een fantastische ochtend gehad en uiteindelijk is dát toch altijd het allerbelangrijkste.

Photographing blooming heathland is always such a treat!

Last Saturday, I hosted two macro photography photowalks for CameraNU in Apeldoorn. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from home, so when I checked the forecast and saw a combination of mist and sunshine… well, there was only one thing to do: set the alarm for 4:45 AM!

And it was absolutely worth the early start. The heathland was truly magical that morning. As you probably know, I have a soft spot for pastel tones, especially pinks and lilacs, so being surrounded by all those beautiful colors was a dream.
I was actually surprised to see how much color was still there, especially after earlier reports about the heath not blooming very well this year. Apparently, the little bit of rain we’ve had lately did make a difference.
Definitely one of those mornings when getting up at stupid o'clock pays off! (quote Gavin Hardcastle fototripper and yes I had a face like a deer with a hangover).

Fotograferen op de bloeiende heide… dat blijft toch altijd een feestje!

Afgelopen zaterdag mocht ik twee photowalks macrofotografie verzorgen voor CameraNU in Apeldoorn. Voor mij zo’n anderhalf uur rijden vanaf huis. En als je dan de weersvoorspelling checkt en ziet dat het mistig én zonnig gaat worden… tja, dan zit er maar één ding op: de wekker om 04.45 uur!

En daar kreeg ik absoluut geen spijt van. Wat was het magisch mooi op de heide! Zoals jullie inmiddels wel weten, ben ik gek op pasteltinten en al helemaal op roze en lila. Dan kun je mij met zo’n prachtig gekleurd heideveld natuurlijk niet blijer maken.
Ik was eerlijk gezegd verrast hoeveel kleur er nog te vinden was, zeker na de eerdere berichten dat de heide dit jaar op veel plekken maar matig bloeide. Dat beetje regen van de afgelopen tijd heeft blijkbaar toch echt goed gedaan.

En dan weet je weer waarom je soms vrijwillig belachelijk vroeg je wekker zet voor fotografie. Dit was het dubbel en dwars waard!

Two similar photos, with the same vanishing point

Two similar photos, with the same vanishing point and perspective, yet they still feel quite different.
The first has a few more elements in the frame, which I think come together really nicely. The second is a little calmer and more minimal.
Still, my preference goes to the first one. For me, it’s more pleasing to look at and feels more dynamic.
But enough about what I think… which one do you prefer?

When I took this photo, I literally had a crab han

When I took this photo, I literally had a crab hanging onto my heel… but hey, I wasn’t going to let that scare me away.
I really wanted to include the little snails on the rocks in my shot. While working on the composition, I spotted a pretty big crab and thought, hey, he’d actually make a nice addition to the scene.
Then he started moving and I thought, oh well… he’s probably more scared of me than I am of him.
Yeah… apparently not.
Mr. Crab decided to make a run straight for my flip-flop and have a little taste of my very modest size 42 left foot. I felt something tickling my heel, looked down and… yep. Mr. Crab.
After a tiny scream- very calm and collected, obviously, he carried on his way and I finally managed to take this photo.

Beautiful sunset, isn’t it? Haha!
Although I’m pretty sure you’re not even looking at the sunset anymore after reading this story…

Toen ik deze foto maakte hing er een krab in mijn hiel... maar vooruit, ik heb mij toch niet weg laten jagen. Ik wilde de slakjes op de rotsen graag mee fotograferen. Toen ik de compositie maakte zag ik een flinke krab zitten en ik dacht, hé die zou leuk zijn in mijn beeld. Maar toen ging hij lopen en ik dacht ach... die is banger voor mij dan ik voor hem. Maar nee hoor... hij vond het toch nodig om op mijn slipper af te rennen en eens te voelen aan mijn bescheiden maat 42 linkervoet. Ik dacht wat kriebelt daar en het was meneer Krabs... na een klein gilletje rende hij door en maakte ik alsnog deze foto.

Mooie zonsondergang trouwens he... haha! Je bent totaal afgeleid nu natuurlijk door dit verhaal.
