The forest is a truly magnificent place, and here in the Netherlands we are fortunate to have a number of beautiful forests. The Mastbos is one of them. Tall pine trees alternate with deciduous trees that stand bare in winter. Long trunks and low shrubs—there is a bit of everything. When it snows, you feel as if you’ve stepped into a stunning winter sports area, but nothing could be further from the truth. This is still just the Netherlands. After six years with little to no snow, I had somewhat lost hope for a real winter. But the Netherlands still has it—stronger even, it seems that a second wintery period is on its way!

Het bos is een machtig mooie plek en in Nederland hebben we een aantal hele mooie bossen. Het Mastbos is daar een van. Hoge dennen afgewisseld met loofbomen die kaal zijn in de winter. Lange stammen en korte struiken, van alles wat. Wanneer het sneeuwt waan je je dan ook in prachtig wintersport gebied, maar niets is minder waar. Dit kan gewoon nog steeds in Nederland, na 6 jaar weinig tot geen sneeuw was ik de hoop op een echte winter een beetje verloren. Maar Nederland heeft het nog steeds, sterker nog, er lijkt een tweede winterse periode aan te komen!

Like many photographers, I have a deep love for lo

Like many photographers, I have a deep love for long tree-lined avenues, especially when the conditions are just right - and they certainly were on Monday, January 5th, in "het Mastbos". It’s so wonderful when snow absorbs all the colors and wraps nature in a thick layer of soft, fluffy white. The bench and the walkers fading into the distance create a lovely sense of depth, which is very welcome in this image.

Ik ben zoals heel veel fotografen dol op lange lanen, zeker wanneer de omstandigheden mooi zijn en mooi waren ze op maandag 5 januari in het Mastbos. Zo heerlijk wanneer de sneeuw alle kleuren opslokt en de natuur hult in een dikke laag witte fluffy sneeuw. Het bankje en de in de verte verdwijnende wandelaars zorgen voor een fijne dieptewerking die hier heel welkom is.

And then it’s time for this photo, which is actually my favorite. Maybe that’s strange, because it’s the darkest photo I’ve taken. And usually I share light, bright images. But the snowfall does something beautiful to this image. I took a similar photo in Lapland, and now this was possible right here in the Netherlands. The falling snow creates a beautiful overlay of soft, blurred snowflakes. The almost duotone feel of the photo gives it a nearly graphic look, which reminds me of a pen drawing. The interplay of light and dark is what really draws me to this image. I also think this photo would work extremely well in a large format. I may add this one to my account at @werkaandemuur.

En dan is het tijd voor deze foto en dit is eigenlijk mijn favoriet. Gek misschien omdat het de donkerste foto is die ik heb geschoten. En meestal plaats ik lichte foto's. Maar de sneeuwval doet iets moois met dit beeld. Een soortgelijke foto heb ik ook in Lapland geschoten en nu kon dit gewoon in Nederland. De vallende sneeuw zorgt voor een mooie overlay van wazige sneeuwvlokken. De bijna duo Tone in de foto zorgt voor een haast grafisch beeld, wat mij doet denken aan een pentekening. Het spel van licht en donker is wat mij enorm aantrekt in deze foto. En ik denk dan ook dat deze foto het in het groot zeer goed zou doen. Wellicht ga ik deze toevoegen aan mijn account bij @werkaandemuur .

For anyone who might have missed it… it recently snowed in the Netherlands!
Yes, and I went in search of the snow too. As soon as I saw the weather reports, I booked a cottage in the High Fens, and a day later I was there with my husband, our dog, my daughter, and son-in-law. However, at the location of the cottage there was only a very thin layer of snow. Luckily, there was a very thick blanket of snow in the High Fens.
This photo, however, was taken in "het Mastbos". On the last day of our weekend away, it was snowing incredibly hard there, and since nothing was expected to fall in Belgium that day, we decided to drive back early instead of spending the day there. And that turned out to be a great choice, because it was magical. It was snowing heavily and the trees were completely white—it was sooo incredibly beautiful. Because it was Monday morning, there was hardly anyone around, and there weren’t even any footprints in the snow. Absolutely wonderful—we really enjoyed it.

Voor wie het nog ontgaan was..... het heeft onlangs gesneeuwd in Nederland! Joh... echt waar?!
Ja en ook ik heb de sneeuw opgezocht. Zodra ik de berichten zag heb ik een huisje geboekt in de Hoge Venen en een dag later was ik daar met mijn man, hondje, dochter en schoonzoon. Echter op de plek waar het huisje stond lag maar een heel dun laagje. Gelukkig lag er in de Hoge Venen een heel dik pak. Deze foto is echter geschoten in het Mastbos... De laatste dag van ons weekendje sneeuwde het daar enorm hard en die dag zou in België niets vallen, dus besloten we vroeg terug te rijden ipv daar de dag door te brengen. En dat was een goede keuze want het was magisch. Het sneeuwde hard en de bomen waren compleet wit, het was zooo ontzettend mooi. Omdat het maandagochtend was, was er ook bijna niemand en waren er geeneens voetstappen in de sneeuw. Echt heerlijk, we hebben genoten.

NIEUWE LEZINGEN VOOR CAMERANU!
Deze winter doe ik weer een tourtje langs de filialen van @cameranu_nl, deze keer kom ik ook naar Urk en Apeldoorn.
Mijn verhaal gaat over mijn liefde voor pastel. Ik houd van de zachte tinten van pastel en ongemerkt zijn mijn foto's de afgelopen jaren ook getransformeerd in pasteltinten. Tijdens mijn lezingen en workshops krijg ik vaak de vraag hoe ik het nu voor elkaar krijg om al mijn beelden zo mooi licht en zacht krijg. Die geheimen ga ik je allemaal vertellen tijdens mijn lezingen!
De eerste lezing is al op zaterdag 24 januari in Urk, dus ook de mensen die meer in het oosten van het land wonen kunnen nu een lezing van mij bijwonen. Leuk toch!!

And yet there is only one photo that is the most beautiful of all, and that is this one. Maybe not on a technical level, but emotionally it rises above everything else.
Our Tommie turned 15 on February 24. Pat always told him that they had a deal together—that he would reach 15—and he did. But on his 15th birthday we already knew his final hours were being counted. I took this photo two days later. We decided to take the dogs to the beach one more time. The wagon came along, because walking was no longer going very well. He was almost deaf and almost blind, but his nose still worked perfectly. We opened the wagon and sure enough, he slowly climbed out. He walked around a bit and then stopped. His nose went into the air, his fur in the wind, and he enjoyed it so intensely—it makes me emotional all over again. I'm so happy that I was able to take this photo of him, capturing his last wish and a moment of pure joy.
Because two days later we said goodbye to our biggest teddy bear, with so, so much pain in our hearts. We miss you every single day, dear Tom!!

En toch is er maar 1 foto de allermooiste en dat is deze. Mss niet op technisch vlak, maar emotioneel stijgt deze boven alles uit.
Onze Tommie werd op 24 februari 15 jaar. Pat heeft altijd tegen hem gezegd dat ze een deal hadden samen dat hij 15 zou worden en dat werd hij ook. Maar op z'n 15e verjaardag wisten we al dat zijn laatste uren aan het tellen waren. Deze foto schoot ik 2 dagen later. We besloten om met de honden nog een keertje naar het strand te gaan. De kar ging mee want lopen ging al niet meer zo goed. Hij was bijna doof en bijna blind, maar zijn neus deed het nog prima. We deden de kar open en ja hoor, hij stapte er moeizaam uit. Hij liep wat heen en weer en stopte eventjes. Zijn neus ging naar de lucht, haren in de wind en hij genoot zo intens, ik word er weer emotioneel van. Ik ben nog iedere dag zo blij dat ik op dat moment deze foto kon maken. Twee dagen later hebben we afscheid van onze grootste knuffelbeer genomen met heel, heel veel pijn in ons hart. We missen je nog iedere dag lieve Tom!!
