Aren't beautiful demoiselles simply magical? The brown ones are the females, while the shimmering blue ones are the males. Both are incredibly active along the stream, perching as lookouts before taking off and, more often than not, returning to exactly the same spot. It's fascinating to watch, and it all happens in the blink of an eye.
I actually liked the motion blur in the background, it adds a wonderful sense of movement to the image. To brighten the otherwise dark background, I blended in a bokeh photo that I had taken at the same location.
This final image is a combination of four photographs. I didn't plan this multiple exposure while I was shooting, but next time I'll definitely try to create it in-camera. Until then, I'm more than happy with what can be achieved in post-processing. The second photo shows a female beautiful demoiselle laying an egg in a stinging nettle.

Wat zijn ze toch magisch he die bosbeekjuffers, de bruine juffers zijn de vrouwtjes, de blauwe de mannetjes. Ze zijn beide erg druk aan het doen aan de waterkant. Ze zitten op de uitkijk en zo nu en dan vliegen ze op om meestal razendsnel weer terug te keren naar hetzelfde plekje. Het is een prachtig gezicht en het gaat razendsnel. Het vervagen in de achtergrond gaf juist een gaaf beeld vond ik. Om de zwarte achtergrond lichter te maken zette ik er een terplekke geschoten bokehfoto overheen. Dit zijn vier foto's over elkaar heen. Alleen bij deze heb ik er ter plekke niet over nagedacht, dat ga ik de volgende keer in camera proberen. Maar in de nabewerking lukt het minstens zo goed. Op de tweede foto zie je hoe het vrouwtje een eitje legt in de brandnetel.

Last weekend I stayed at a campsite near the forest, hoping to find beautiful demoiselles along a small stream. Every previous visit had been a disappointment because the stream was dry, but after days of heavy rain I finally got lucky, it was full of life.
The only challenge was the shooting angle. I had little room to move and the dark stream made for a rather gloomy background. Since I'm a big fan of multiple exposures, I photographed the stream with my telephoto lens over the damselflies. The in-camera result was promising, but by blending the original images manually in Photoshop, I created exactly the look I was after.
I love experimenting like this, especially in such a peaceful place where nature has the stage all to itself.

Vorig weekend stond ik op een camping vlak bij het bos, in de hoop bosbeekjuffers te vinden langs een beekje. Eerdere keren stond het beekje altijd droog, maar na dagen van flinke regen had ik geluk: het krioelde er van het leven.
De uitdaging zat dit keer in het standpunt. Er was weinig ruimte om te variëren en de donkere beek vormde een sombere achtergrond. Omdat ik dol ben op meervoudige belichting, fotografeerde ik de beek met mijn telelens over de juffers heen. Het resultaat in de camera was veelbelovend, maar door de beelden later zelf in Photoshop te combineren, kreeg ik precies de sfeer die ik voor ogen had.
Wat is het toch heerlijk om zo creatief bezig te zijn, op een rustige plek waar je de natuur helemaal voor jezelf hebt.

This little flower is an absolute natural in front of the camera!
During the macro workshop, one of the participants was struggling to find a composition and asked for a little help. So I showed her how I approach a scene, lifted my camera, and click... this was the result.
Suuuuper annoying, of course, when you’ve been hunting for a shot for fifteen minutes already! 😅 Trust me, it doesn’t usually happen this quickly for me either, this was one of those rare moments when everything just fell into place.
I couldn’t resist taking the photo. Usually, when I’m teaching, the magic shots seem to save themselves for another day... but this one was simply too good not to share!

Dit prachtige bloemetje is zo ontzettend fotogeniek. Een van de deelnemers aan de macroworkshop kon de compositie niet vinden dus vroeg ze om hulp. Ik legde uit hoe ik kijk, ik richt mijn camera en dit was meteen het resultaat. Heeeeeeel irritant natuurlijk als je al een kwartier aan het zoeken bent. Ook bij mij gaat het niet altijd zo, dit was wel een hele snelle. Maar ik heb de foto toch maar even geschoten. Zo’n lekker plaatje komt er meestal niet uit als ik aan het lesgeven ben… maar deze verdiende wel een plaatje op mijn pagina!

This super tiny flower was tucked away between all

This super tiny flower was tucked away between all the other colorful blooms. It was easy to miss, but that gorgeous bright blue instantly grabbed my attention. As soon as I found it, I started experimenting with it. Using a cool white balance and multiple exposures transformed the entire image into dreamy shades of blue.
I’m in love with the result!!

Dit superkleine bloemetje groeide tussen de andere uitbundig kleurende planten. Het viel bijna niet op, maar dankzij de felblauwe kleur trok het toch mijn aandacht. Ik ben er gelijk na het vinden van de bloem meteen mee aan de gang gegaan. Door het kiezen van een koele witbalans en meervoudige belichting kleurt de hele foto mooi blauw. I love it!!

The possibilities of multiple exposure are endless… you can make soft images even dreamier, fill in empty spaces, add colors… or just do everything at once—that works too 🤣🤣

De mogelijkheden van meervoudige belichting zijn eindeloos… je kunt al zachte beelden nog softer maken, je kunt leegtes opvullen, je kunt kleuren toevoegen…. Of alles tegelijkertijd dat is ook een optie 🤣🤣

This beautiful dark pink flower bloomed abundantly in the Vlinderhof! It was such an eye-catching and lovely little flower that almost everyone took a picture of it. So did I. These two photos are both a single (!) exposure.

Deze prachtige donkerroze bloem bloeide rijkelijk in het Vlinderhof! Het was echt zo’n opvallend en lieflijk bloemetje dat bijna iedereen het wel gefotografeerd heeft. Ik dus ook. Deze twee foto’s zijn beide een enkele (!) belichting!
