Courtship displays by great crested grebes in the blue hour, just before sunrise.
In the first photo, love is in the air — their beaks perfectly crossed, as if they’re playing a game of tic-tac-toe. Haha…
And that loving look in the second photo… pure nature at its finest.
The soft light of the blue hour creates very little contrast and exactly those dreamy pastel tones that I love so much. The pink colors were missing unfortunately.
Tomorrow I’ll share the same grebes again, but this time bathed in the very first rays of sunlight.

Baltsende futen in het blauwe uurtje, vlak voor zonsopkomst. Op de eerste foto spat de liefde ervan af — de snavels perfect gekruist, alsof ze boter, kaas en eieren spelen. Haha… En die liefdevolle blik op de tweede foto… puur natuurspektakel. Het zachte licht van het blauwe uurtje zorgt voor weinig contrast en precies die dromerige pasteltinten waar ik zo van houd. De roze kleur waar ik blij van wordt, was er helaas niet deze ochtend. Morgen deel ik dezelfde futen opnieuw, maar dan badend in de eerste zonnestralen.

Great crested grebes in their courtship display. it’s always an incredible spectacle to watch. For years, I’ve been trying to capture that exact moment when both birds rise out of the water with weeds in their beaks, seeming to dance together.
This time, I managed to capture the moment… but it’s still not perfect. Too far away, the light was already a bit harsh, and my angle from the bridge wasn’t ideal.
So why share it anyway? Because the perfect shot is rarely a lucky one. You often have to go out again and again, waiting for the right light, the right position, and birds that actually cooperate.
So yes… an imperfect photo of a perfect moment.
One day I’ll post the perfect shot. Just wait and see.

Baltsende futen, het blijft een spectaculair gezicht. Al jaren probeer ik dat ene moment vast te leggen waarop ze samen met wier uit het water komen en lijken te dansen.
Dit keer is het gelukt om het moment te vangen… maar nog niet perfect. Te ver weg, te fel licht, en mijn standpunt vanaf de brug was niet ideaal.
Waarom ik ’m toch deel? Omdat de perfecte foto zelden een lucky shot is. Je moet er vaak keer op keer op uit, wachten op het juiste licht, de juiste plek én futen die meewerken.
Dus ja… een niet perfecte foto van een perfect moment.
Die perfecte plaat komt nog wel. Let maar op.

Great crested grebes… I’m fascinated by them.
The transformation they go through during the breeding season is simply amazing. In winter, they’re rather modest grey, black and white waterbirds, but as early spring arrives, color appears, a beautiful ruff develops… and then they’re ready for the dance of courtship. And that is such a wonderful thing to witness.
For years, I’ve been following the grebes each spring, always searching for that ultimate shot. This one isn’t quite there yet, but it comes close.
This image is a multiple exposure created from three photos, combined in Photoshop. The result straight out of the camera wasn’t what I had envisioned, so I decided to merge them myself. My signature style is clearly visible in this work and I absolutely love that.
Love it or hate it… I don’t really care.
As long as I like it.

Futen… ik blijf erdoor gefascineerd.
De transformatie die ze doormaken in het broedseizoen is simpelweg fantastisch. In de winter zijn het vrij ingetogen grijs-zwart-witte watervogels, maar zodra het vroege voorjaar aanbreekt, verschijnt er kleur, een prachtige kraag… en dan begint het spel van verleiding. En dat is zó mooi om te zien.
Al jaren volg ik de futen in het voorjaar, telkens op zoek naar dat ultieme beeld. Dit is het nog net niet, maar het komt aardig in de buurt.
Deze foto is een meervoudige belichting van drie beelden, samengevoegd in Photoshop. Het resultaat in de camera was niet zoals ik voor ogen had, dus besloot ik het zelf te creëren. Mijn handtekening zit er duidelijk in en daar geniet ik van.

Last Sunday I got up nice and early again for a change. The night was cold and the day was going to be warm, and for me that’s a sign that it might turn out to be beautiful. I also knew there would be little to no clouds, so I wasn’t expecting pink skies, but it was quite humid and because of that the sun rose soooo incredibly beautifully! I really didn’t see that coming. It was truly breathtaking. The sun appeared above the horizon like a big orange ball. The higher it rose, the more it changed into a golden sphere. And how wonderful is it when someone happens to be walking their little dog on the bridge in the distance, while at the same time a bird flies across the sun. That sunrise alone already made me so happy that I had gotten up so early.

Afgelopen zondag ben ik weer eens een keertje lekker vroeg opgestaan. De nacht was koud en de dag zou warm zijn en dat is voor mij een signaal dat het wel eens mooi zou kunnen worden. Ik wist ook dat er weinig tot geen wolken zouden zijn, dus ik verwachtte geen roze luchten, maar het was wel vochtig en daardoor kwam de zon zooooo prachtig mooi op! Dit zag ik even niet aankomen. Het was werkelijk adembenemend. De zon kwam als een grote oranje bal boven de horizon uit. Hoe hoger hij kwam, hoe meer hij veranderde in een gouden kogel. Hoe lekker is het dan dat er net iemand zijn hondje uitlaat op de brug in de verte en er tegelijkertijd een vogel voor de zon langs vliegt. Alleen deze zonsopkomst al maakte mij al zo blij dat ik zo vroeg opgestaan was.

One year ago we were enjoying Iceland to the max. It was a roller coaster holiday for me personally, but I wouldn't have changed it for anything else.
Thanks girls for catching me those days. You made sure I didn't fall.

Een jaar geleden genoot ik enorm op Iceland. Het was een rare vakantie voor mij op persoonlijk vlak, maar ik had deze dagen met niemand anders willen delen. Dankjewel meiden dat jullie ervoor zorgden dat het een topvakantie werd.

It’s daffodil time… I’m usually not such a big fan

It’s daffodil time… I’m usually not such a big fan of yellow, but in spring every color is welcome. I especially love the mini daffodils. When you photograph them through other flowers, you get such a wonderfully fresh and colorful composition.
Delightful… the sun is shining again, so people, enjoy your day!

Het is narcissentijd… ik ben nooit zo fan van geel maar in het voorjaar zijn alle kleuren welkom. Zeker de mini narcissen vind ik leuk. Als je dan door de andere bloemen heen fotografeert krijg je zo’n lekkere frisse en kleurrijke compositie. Heeeeeerlijk, de zon schijnt weer, dus mensen geniet van je dag.
